I'm a fan. I probably have all his albums. His first albums are very stark voice and guitar, his lyrics from the beginning have been uniquely poetic (and he was a published poet). There is a remarkable continuity over 35 years, nobody writes lyrics like LC. Over time, some albums were more produced, less folky, by the time of I'm Your Man, he was sort of Euro-pop with synthesizers. I would imagine there are loads of websites with everything you might wish to know about LC. If you want to start, I would start at the beginning- his first 2 albums set a style and have great songs, start to finish. The only album I would not fully recommend, sadly, is his latest, which is, IMO, his weakest.
Follow Ups:
I don't know about his latest "Dear Heather" is really his weakest. I kind of like it, and the female singers on the album are very good, and at least the sound quality is great as usual. I enjoy the first half of the album anyway. For a sure-fire winner, try "Songs of Love and Hate." Really goes to the root of LC and sounds pretty good, too, unlike many of his "Best of" CD's..
In fact, if you know albums similar to "Songs of Love and Hate," let me know.
How about the album with the title that goes something like, "New Clothes for an Old Story".How would you guys describe that album? I think it was made in 74'.
a good one, it has Chelsea Hotel and Who by Fire, if I'm remembering correctly. There is a huge wealth of info on LC on the Internet, allmusic.com has a complete discography and there are several tribute websites that are full of content. Just google his name and you will find out all you need to knwo.
