I was racking my brain at work yesterday, - without my CDs at home to look at, - looking for some varied Ambient suggestions for you. But you and DaveC are already on a very interesting path....
I thought of Cluster, and some of the interesting, - (although somewhat pretentious), early work of Fripp and Eno.
Have you heard of Eno and Hassell: "Fourth World, Possible Musics?"
Nice IMO: and Jon Hassell is on a number of "world-like-ambient" collaborations that I have as well...
Isn't it amazing what Eno began?
I was incredulous some time ago that a poster over in General didn't know who Eno was... No offense to anyone, - but it shocks me when I encounter someone who's never heard of him....
Cheers,

Follow Ups:
Hey Sordid
Thanx for the tips on Cluster and Jon Hassell - I will definitely check 'em out.
Yep, Eno is a true musical visionary. I don't like all of his work - hell, even some of his highly regarded works I do not like - but I can respect their significance. I would like to think most music-lovers would at least have some idea of his work and contribution to music, even if it is jut his production stuff for more commercial bands.
This whole ambient thing is making music fun for me again - prob what I needed given my grumpiness over the past few months. Time for me to put in another music order – sacrificing most of my coffee and alcohol has left me with more $$$ for music!
Cheers.
P.S. Just had a quick look at Hassell - looks really interesting and may be right up my alley. Nice.
Bliss was the band that I wanted to mention that was downtempo/ambient, songs...
Maneesh Du Moor, - excellent, - again, more musical; mixing slow-tempo, groovish, lounge and ambient..
Nafas and Kayhan Kalhor are more ambient......
Yes...so many people are doing straight-up ambient.. and then so many others are mixing folk with ambient, jazz with ambient, experimental noises with ambient, techno with ambient...
too crazy.......
Cheers,

Two more to look into. Bliss and Maneesh Du Moor sound like my kind of thing. I will see if I can track 'em down and perhaps have a listen to some samples. I may do the same with Nafas and Kayhan Kalhor.

Ultimatety, I think this is the type of stuff I will like. I am an old school melody, timing, gestalt kind of guy, tho I like that kind of stuff genuinely creative, non-formulaic, off-kilter... progressive and emotionally charged. For example, the melodies can be subtle and fleeting, perhaps woven through a dark ambience. Bah, I'm rambling. That said, I really like some of Eno's straight-up ambient; go figure. This is a musical journal I am sure to enjoy.
Cheers
Judy used to be half a Snatch and when Eno was in hospital was the person who infamously took the (I think) 18th century harpsichord music to him that played quietly on only one channel during a storm and supposedly inspired ambient.
She also made entire recordings, some in collaboration with Eno that were later appropriated by him as his own including some eerily predicting My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts.. you could try the King's Lead Hat single credited to Snatch AND Brian Eno. If you like anagrams, take a look at the title...
This is something on which she is quite definite.
She now lives in NY and makes occasional appearances whilst making a parallel living in jewellery... so to speak.
If you ever see a copy of her Pal Judy album... buy it.
Information Rain alone is worth the price of entry. It is an Adrian Sherwood production and a fab record.
She did an album w/Adrian Sherwoods label around 1982. On-U #16

I remember really liking it at the time.
I think Information Rain is the prophetic standout.
As usual, a very, very, interesting post....
You Rock!!
Judy Nylon is something that needs to be checked out for sure. I'm on the case....
Thanks again,

I just watched the European Super Cup with something of a hangover and a cold and am a bit overwhelmed... thank you thank you thank you... I'd just like to thank...

My neighbour and I are going to remove a chimney from my roof today.
Lovely.
Hey, I thought you had that nice new place in New Farm - chimney needs removing there, or have you moved?
Hope you can get some rest at some point soon.
Cheers
I sold the New Farm house at 5.15pm on Xmas Eve, approximately the exact moment estate agents say is when someone turned the property tap off.
I had a very long settlement and moved up to Ferny Hills in April to a total renovator.
Good work on the sale - nice timing. Ferny Hills is a nice spot; a little different to New Farm tho. Renovation must be both challenging and rewarding. My girlfriend and I may be embarking on renovation in six months or so...
I wish you the best of fortune.
I used to do them back in Britain and now I have stopped developing it's fun to get back at it!
Are you thinking of any area in particular?
Inner-ish city Brisbane. Probably start with an older unit in a character building. That is, a builing with character, which may or may not have its fair share of inhabiting characters... especially in West End and Hill End where I used to hang until early this year.
... did you move or what?
Hang on, weren't you finishing a degree?
West end is an area that has some legs for the next few years.
And this next year is a great time to buy.
I probably renovated 8 or 9 places in Britain and it's fun to do. NOt quite so much fun as you spend evening after evening sitting in dust, but fun anyway!
It's also the best way of moving up the property ladder.
All you need to do is look at A LOT of places first and then figure out THE THING that a place has going for it.
A view, a big living room, a something that you can accentuate.
The redevelopment plans for West End are enormous, and whilst in maybe 10 years it will have lost its... bohemian(?) flavour (just like New Farm) it will massively increase in price.
With the housing slump, repossessions etc, the rest of this year, even with the rate reduction we just had, is going to be hard on the market and thus a good time to buy.
You will become a Saturday morning wanderer round open houses for a few months mate!
Keep all the agents' details of places in a big file and write notes on them about the places. Soon you will know the market better than they do.
You will also have a wealth of information that you can refer back to.
Happy hunting!
Hi Dave
Finished my BHSc (Nutritional Medicine) late last year, moved to Sydney with my girlfriend, then got a job back up in Brisbane (New Farm) doing clinical research (of sorts), living out of a suitcase at my sister's place out in the sticks (culture shock!)... have been travelling to and from Sydney ever since. My girlfriend and I are moving back to Brisbane at the end of this month.
Thanks for the advice on renovation and the property market. Yeah, West End has big plans... it has changed over the eight years I lived there - it is losing some of its relaxed charm, and will continue to do so - but for now is still West End: a sort of a bohemian country town 15 minutes walk from the CBD. Unique. I would like to buy an older apartment there, renovate and live in it until West End changes significantly, then move on. By that stage I should have started and completed my Biostatistics Masters and will be able to work from a home office for the most part - convenient location will not be important. Thinking the hills around Brisbane or Northern NSW... lots to do to get to that point tho.
Frankly, in the near future I just want to get out and enjoy some music, theatre, film etc. with friends and get my home audio system sorted (currently non-functional!).
How are you finding Ferny Hills - is it on the way to Mt Glorious? I often drive there when I need a time out / dose of good ol' mother naature. How does it feel to be distanced form the Powerhouse? ;^)
Cheers
It's not so bad up here.
In addition to West End, Bulimba might be a worth thinking about. Nice social life there and a quick hop across the river on the ferry. Lots of slightly unfashionable apartment buildings.
You might like to think of Mount Mee and Boonah for future moves.Mount Mee has the most wonderful views to the north9ish) and Boonah is likely to get a rail link into the city. It's only 68Km out.
I looked their myself and will do so again when I want to move on.
No, Ferny Hills is really nice. Quiet and leafy. Pretty.
I visited Mt Mee a while back. A really nice place that I put out of my mind because it was just a little too far out of town at the time. That may not be relevent in a few years tho. Back on the list with a bullet.
I see two blokes hanging out on Mt Mee, listening to off-kilter tunes, talking left-of-centre politics, as a good ol' QLD storm rolls in from the west. Hey, that actually sounds great!
Cheers Dave
... of land and you can see forever.
Or nothing in a storm!
I was there once and I watched the Glasshouse Mountains disappear in cloud.
Only a few houses there right on the edge.
Not too expensive at present because as you say, it's just that little way from town.
But...
