Hi Sordidman,
I think that Ian's suicide serves as harsh punctuation to the message of his music... Of how personal and authentic his vision truly was.
He was living the grim nightmare that the music evokes.
The "enhancement" ,as you describe, is both ironic and chilling... But I must agree.
Prodigy strikes me more as a reflection of a marginalized subculture... born out of hostility. A dark side of the mainstream "hippy-type" rave scene... combative and atavistic.
That said, I think Prodigy's The Fat of the Land is among the best of its genre (I guess: Electronica?) along with material from Orbital, The Crystal Method, and Underworld.

Follow Ups:
Yeah,
I didn't mean to be too far-reaching with that post. I was just thinking about those things as buying the Editors, the National, and somewhat, - Interpol. All of those new bands, (including Sigur Ros), as people have said, have some heavy Joy Division and somewhat Echo and the Bunnyman influences. But they are "different" enough to me.. (to make them so much better than the bands like Stone Temple Pilots, Creed, Nickelback, the Wallflowers, and that other wretched band, (oh, Matchbox20) that've all been copying, really blatantly, Pearl Jam).
Or, do i just love the old late 70s, early 80s, stuff and hold it higher regard?
Combative and hostile is a great way to describe Prodigy.
Cheers,
Come on now, you knew you were lost, but you carried on anyway
Picked up some more Echo and Depeche Mode reissues (somewhat recently)... and recently put my cassette deck (!) back into the system for the sole purpose of listening to some tapes that I don't have on CD or vinyl. A little Bauhaus, Bowie, Husker Du, Pixies... and one recommendation for you - New Fast Automatic Daffodils. Kind of a dumb name, but I'd bet they'd float your boat... especially the album Pigeonhole. Talk about Joy Division influenced!

In particular, how much are they compressed?

The domestic (non-SACD) releases are packaged as CD+DVD... The CD's sound good, but the 24/48 PCM tracks on the DVD's are even better (less compression)... Only problem is you need a monitor to navigate to the 2ch PCM tracks or multichannel tracks on the DVD. There's also some nice bonus tracks and videos. Good stuff!

Yeah, - I've found with the Talking heads and the Jesus and Mary Chain, - DualDiscs, - it's fun to flip them over and compare the redbook to the DVD-A/PCM tracks. IN both cases, - they sound much better....
Did you really think that you could put it in a safe behind a painting, lock it up and leave?.... Walk away now, and you're going to start a war
I've wondered for a long time how SOFAD would sound without Flood's sludge, but I didn't want to fork over the $ for the CDs without an indication if it'd be an improvement. Getting rid of the harshness of Violator and Music For The Masses would be nice, too.
EDIT: The last time I listened to Violator and Music For The Masses, I had just changed some stuff in my system. Those changes must have needed to settle in, because I listened to both albums today, and they sound fine, not harsh at all. Hmm.
But my comment about SOFAD still stands, LOL.
