Theivery Corp has 4 nights at 9:30 Club in DC (from where the hail) and they all sold out before I could get tickets. Oh well.....
Follow Ups:
You know....I love those kids, - but the last couple of times I saw them was a bit of let down. Maybe I'm just getting old and have too high expectations for my $50.....
Cheers Awe..

I know what you mean. Each of their last releases gets my respect to soem extent but gets little play. I liked the earlier rawer sound.

Woulda been fun to go to a show though. No live music in about a year now.....that's what happens when you move to the boonies
Even a little bit of a down show for Thievery is still awesome.More than anything, I was a little bummed as to the sound quality. The first 5 or 6 times I saw them, - their sound, and sound values, were really a big cut above. Which is difficult when you have 6 singers, two DJs, and multiple acoustic and electronic instruments.
I shouldn't be too harsh, bands that I've seen recently like Groove Armada, Dead Can Dance reunion, Sigur Ros, Massive Attack, and Thievery are amazing in their ability to incorporate DJs, sequencing, and live instruments, = both acoustic and electric/electronic. I remember when my band first tried to add something as simple as a drum machine: the results were hilarious....
My biggest whine lately is that all of the groups that I like are not from the USA, - (excepting Thievery and few others). I don't know if it's VISA troubles, money issues, or what, but no one seems to be coming to SF...... I had to miss the Prodigy, - that was a tough one to let go of.....

Nice post....I am finally getting to DC for a weekend(a nice weekend hotel stay) and there's nothing worth seeing....hopefully something will magically appear. I am so live music deprived since moving out to the boonies. I used to go to shows all the time. I knew the old 9:30 owner and could get on the pest list anytime. Those were the days.
Both play a higher-energy variety of music than the downtempo style of Thievery Corp, but they excel at combining real instruments with electronics in a live setting. In fact, the live experience rather than studio recordings, is what they're all about.STS9 is based in Northern California, and according to their schedule, they're playing in your neck of the woods on February 14th (Santa Cruz).

Another very good, though younger, live instrumental/electronic band whose shows I've really enjoyed is Lotus from Philadelphia. It just so happens they're playing in San Francisco on December 30th.

If you like to get down with your funky-ass bad self, either of these would be fun shows to check out. I've also noticed that both bands tend to draw a fair number of cute young ladies, so that's definitely a plus :-)
thanks so much for the suggestions....(can't remember the last time I had some that were that good)!! :-) :-)Much appreciated....

Go to the Lotus show on December 30th and buy a taper a beer (not a bad way to hook yourself up with a recording, I might add). I can almost guarantee it'll be a great show, especially considering it's on NYE weekend.I haven't seen Lotus in a few years, but taped them myself a few times in the early 2000's. There were only about 10 people at their first show in Philadelphia, but they've since really taken off on the live music scene. At the same time, their sound has changed considerably, but it still has a jazzy, mellow, organic vibe. I'll dig a little deeper on archive.org over the next couple of days to find the gems, but attached is a link to a decent-sounding recording from earlier this year. As the user review at the bottom of the page mentions, listen to the second-to-last track. Nice stuff.
