I love both of my STAX phones, but I've been curious about how planars do in comparison. I've heard that they excel in bass reproduction. I listen mostly to classical music, categorized very broadly. I need to send my two STAX amps out for refurbishing, so now would be a good time to consider this. I listen to CDs, SACDs, and LPs.
Around $400 is my limit. What about Fostex T50RP?

Follow Ups:
They are widely available for about $300 and I enjoy the way they sound.
I have a pair of Hifiman HE1000 V2 and they are fantastic. A great planar headphone. Hifiman makes many headphones for many budgets. So would highly recommend looking into one of those.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll check them out.
I'm currently interested in the Moondrop Para, which are eight Ohms & $300.

About six months ago, I bought the STAX SR-007Mk2 headphones bundled with the SRM-700T driver unit. Then, a couple of months ago I bought the new STAX SR-X9000 headphones. There's no question that these STAX electrostatics sound better than any other headphones I've ever heard. On the other hand, I also just bought the FiiO FT5 Planar headphones and I'll have to say I'm very impressed. They don't sound as good as STAX electrostatics, but for a mere $450, they're very listenable and they have excellent bass. I could easily live with them without ever wanting more. Additionally, they come with a beautiful leather carrying case and two sets of ear cushions.
Happy listening!

The planar diaphragm is "much thicker" than those found in my stats. I believe my 507 pair has a 1um diaphragm, while my 407 pair has a 2um diaphragm.
I'm looking to augment my listening, not replace my stats.

Where do you find the diaphragm thickness of STAX electrostatic headphones? I looked on the STAX webpage, but I couldn't find anything about diaphragm thickness. The FiiO webpage states the FT5 planar diaphragms to be 6-microns thick. I'd like to know the thickness of my SR-007MK2 diaphragms and my SR-X9000 diaphragms. Do you know where I can find those specifications?
Thanks!

Unfortunately I don't recall the source. Although I'm reluctant to recommend it as a resource, they could tell you on the Head-Case forum. Very, very knowledgeable bunch, but they can be quite aggressive. Their resident expert, who is truly an expert on everything STAX & electrostatic headphones, hates the 507s, by the way.

I enjoy all my headphones and I listen to them all periodically. However, my STAX electrostatics are the best sounding headphones I've ever heard. Unfortunately, they don't have the robust bass that my FiiO FT5 planar headphones have.
Happy listening!
I finally bought a really good pair of speakers & set them up in a way that is not half-assed. Now I feel drawn back to my phones, probably for the micro detail they afford me. I'm missing something with the speakers.

You had me excited thinking Magnepan had headphones now...
I have HiFiMan headphones and earphones. I like the sound quality and the value of their products. Refurbished HE6se headphones at $589 are above your price range but worth considering. I have a pair and like them a lot. And yes, the bass is very good. I also have their HE400 headphones and Svanar LE earphones. I REALLY like the Svanar LE. You can check out what they have in your price range.
Many of their headphones are open back and need a little extra power for my listening level.
Regards,
Steve
