I have a few fairly hifi phones: a couple PSB, a Senn 650 and a Grado. I never cared much for listening to the phones at home, only used them for walks. Phones always sounded somewhat claustrophobic to me. No "air" or sense of spaciousness. And the sound not coming from in front...
Anyway due to an increasing interest in surround sound, dolby, etc. I grabbed a Senn dsppro from the Bay.
I don't have many multi-channel or Dolby CDs but I read the dsppro manual and it has a digital time delay function.
Damned if I don't like the phones a lot more when listening through the dsp! The time delay function adds a sense of space, air, and room size. The dsp has a defeat switch so it is easy to A/B.
And the dsp is much more like listening to speakers in room. I may be using my phones a lot more!

Follow Ups:
lets you hinge out the drivers for more speaker-like presentation, like AKG K1000. Raal is very expensive, and unfortunately, K1000 on used market sells for premium prices. Mysphere can hinge, too, but also very expensive.
So if you like what DSP does, that's one fine way to go.
I personally prefer that my headphones sound like headphones and speakers sound like speakers. The true limiation for headphones, no matter how expensive, is the lack of physical air movement and bodily vibration conduction IMO.
Have you heard anything about how the Raal SR1 compares to Stax headphones?
Thanks!

I have Raal SR1a and Stax Omege II and SR009. Each will favor different music genres, but IME Raal does seem to reach that "good enough not to need any change" status more regularly than others..
Wow! You've spent some money on headphones. Thanks for your response. Maybe I'll splurge on some Raal SR1a headphones. Thanks again,

on the used market SR1a + Schiit Jot R amp that someone is unloading at a good price.
You don't need to spend a ton, a good used set of SR-5 will do.
They went out of production nearly 50 years ago or something like that but they're better than the Senn 600 for sure.
Headphones are essential here, my wife likes to sleep in on her days off and I can't use speakers. Or she's working from home and I can't use the speakers.
Or I'm listening to Eric Dolphy and can't use the speakers. Heh.
I wouldn't be without them, but I won't use anything but Stax (although I'm considering the Nectar HiveX). I've used Sennheisers and they're excellent but they're not as good as Stax.
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.
Always wanted to but always felt they were more expensive than I wanted to spend.
Plus since they were still just two transducers sitting on one's ears, I always assumed they would have the same limitations that my dynamic phones had in terms of lack of "air" and sense of space.
And at this point in my retirement my big spending days are pretty much over.

...probably not more than you'd spend for the Senn HD-650.
Once you go Stax, you'll never go bax.

I do remember researching years ago, and all the STAX seemed to be more than a grand.
Too late now anyway I guess.
