Hi,
I am new to Electrostatic headphones. I recently bought a pair, after reading good reviews, of relatively inexpensive, Stax SRM2525 solid state amp/SR-L300 earspeaker combination. New on eBay, for around $600, shipped from Japan. I think they sound excellent. Detail and space are very enjoyable. My main stereo system is tube based, and I prefer the sound of tubes. I am wondering if I could squeeze a little more enjoyment out of these, if I replace the little SS SR2525 amp, with a tube based unit. Could anyone point me to what tube based amps would be compatible with the SR-L300 earspeakers?
New or used fine.
Thanks,

And inexpensive estat drivers are in the price range where you would find expensive headphone amps for dynamic/planar headphones.
I recently bought an inexpensive estat driver for my L700MkII earspeakers and that amp/driver cost me $1600 . You can get one cheaper but be careful.
Stax full range estat earspeakers are capable of great sound but the driver/amp is critical. You need a very good quality driver. Stax or Woo Audio drivers are good choices.
Good luck with whatever you choose,
Ed

Foolish for wanting a pair.
Found a Stax SRM-006TA energizer/amplifier on eBay.
Just under $800 , coming from Japan. Uses a pair of 6GC7 tubes.
Ordered it 8 days ago, FedEx tracking says its on the truck for delivery today.
Hoping it sounds great.
Thanks,

Check with Bottlehead, but the Crack amp might be good. It's a single-ended, output transformer-less amp for high-impedance headphones built around the 6080 dual triode. On my Senn 800's, it's heaven. And it's cheap: $315 or $430 with the optional "Speedball" constant-current power supply. It's a kit - an easy build, though the Speedball requires some precision soldering skills. Bottlehead, as a company, and especially through the very active forums on its site, provides outstanding support. There is plenty of room inside to substitute your latest-and-greatest capacitors, a stepped-resistive-ladder volume control, and/or an extra board with a Corda crossfeed circuit.

Not a kit, but still...
That's gorgeous. It's also a great price, knowing Bottlehead quality. (I've built two of their kits.)I've been using an old SRM energizer for two years, and it's time for an upgrade. I've considered the newer SRM-353X for my SR-507 earspeakers, but I like tubes. I must throw this one in the ring.
