Got up extra early yesterday, figured I'd spin some LPs. Stax SR-207/SRM-1/Mk11 combo.
First album played fine. Took a shower and left the system powered up.
Put the next record on, left channel is now significantly lower in volume than the right.
And it's definitely the SR-207s. It's not the cable, nothing I did to the cable made any change. Apparently something is up with the left driver.
Well, shit.
So I'm back on the SR-5s. Good to have backups at least.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
Follow Ups:
Has the left channel returned?

I could replace the driver if I could find one.

Try Head-Fi or Head-Case for sources. Those guys are always cannibalizing pairs.

Will do.
Glad I've got the SR5s as backup.

The problem is with the dedicated electronics, not the earphones themselves. I had a similar problem
I have the Stax amp and also an SRD-6/SB box. In fact, I used the SR-207s with the SRD until I bought the amp.
Doesn't matter if I use the SR-207 with the Stax amp or the main amp/SRD, still barely any sound from the left channel.
I'm using my backup SR-5 set now with the Stax amp and there are no channel balance issues.

Had a similar symptom. I sent it in for repair and a few years later I had the same symptom again. IIRC they had to replace one of the FETs.

Life is analog...digital is just samples thereof
I pulled out my SRD-7/SB and connected it to the Hafler. Plugged in the SR-207s. Same problem.
And it's getting worse. Had them playing last night and needed to turn the left channel control to 2 o'clock in order to balance both channels.

Hi GOOD55,
any chance that your shower raised the humidity level in the room where the Stax are? Maybe one driver is more sensitive to humidity levels than the other.

On opposite sides of the house.
Clearly something is wrong with the left channel driver. The problem is getting worse. Bummer.

I have a few pairs, including a couple of vintage pairs (SR-5 and SRX-III), and one channel of my SRX-IIIs has noticeably lower volume than the other. Oddly enough, the volume equalizes after a time. I leave them plugged into one of the outputs for a while and listen to another pair, and it usually fixes it. I found that this is a fairly common problem with older headphones, so I haven't been bothered by it. Leave them plugged in and see if it sorts itself out.
Water in your ear from shower?
The first troubleshooting tip is the flip them right-to-left. The problem IS that the drivers change sensitivity over time.
Yes, Mr. President, it is probably time to dust off your Statute of Limitations calendar.
The amp has a ganged volume control, supposedly for just this situation.
SR-5s actually are better than the SR-207s in some ways, so it's not that great of a step down from one to the other.

I have had the SRX-IIIs for decades, but I was able to buy three pairs of SR-5s from a defunct dealer a couple of years ago for CDN$100. They were untested, but they all worked perfectly. I gave one pair to a buddy, sold one pair for $100 and kept one pair.
You are right, they are excellent especially for their age, and they are more comfortable than the SRX-IIIs. Overall though I prefer my pro-voltage SR-202s, but that could be because I use the SR-5s with a basic speaker-level energizer.
But the SR-5 sounds faster to my ears and it's better on top.
