Anyone using UPS is really taking a chance with their merchandise.
Why pay insurance? Why use UPS at all? They are friggin MORONS!
Bottom line, DON'T USE UPS!!!
Follow Ups:
I'm waiting on a package from UPS that had made it all the way to town I live in(according to the tracking info) before it was shipped to yet another town more than 150 miles from here. I can't imagine this is cost effective? I hope it makes it back from the sightseeing tour without incident.
Methinks not. A delivered failure rate of any size would kill most small manufacturers. Now, for true disaster shipping, look at the large home appliance biz; reefers, dishwashers, stoves...
(1) dishwasher. No external visible damage. Installed and fails to run. Locked rotor on the motor (China made, Westinghouse branded, Maytag appliance, FWIW). Now, it takes a fairly healthy whump to lock up an electric motor rotor.
(1) reefer; Maytag, also. Didn't make it off the delivery truck, after unboxing. Two of the 4 wheels sheared off, mounting bolts ripped out.Dealer confides that they see 30% hidden damage or failure rate. In between warranty claims and returns to the factory, those costs of course go right to the retail priceline.
It has to be factory packaging - assuming *that's* decent enough - at the least. And for a reference, consider lighting fixtures (think glass parts). If you've ever ordered a fixture from Rejuvenation Lighting in Oregon, you'll learn a thing about bulletproof packaging. How about transporting an automobile transoceanic to your local dealer? What's their secret, outside of experience?
Perhaps some audio products just don't have the real world stoutness of construction to be moved around the country or world.
I mailed Xpresspost- sort of low level courier- a small, insured audio package from Canada to a guy I sold it to in Arizona. It did not arrive in approx. three weeks. I telephoned Canada Post and they traced it to U.S. customs and then it disappeared. Although it was lost by U.S. Postal Service. I was sent a check for the insurance within one week of beginning the investigation. I have no connection to the postal service but just trying to give credit where it is due.
They have a time frame between postal code and zip code in US. I once sent a parcel by Express Mail and it was one day late. Who knows it is because of USPS or US custom. Canada Post sent me a stamp pack that worth more than my postage.
I have been waiting since Nov27 for a COD check. They have been lying for weeks saying the check is in the mail. UPS NEVER again.
3" dense foam is your best friend.
And I agree if you don't get it packed right by the SELLER... it is the SELLER's FAULT!
Insurance or no insurance, the SELLER is 100% responsible for packaging, and 100% responsible for safe delivery.
I have a cable being sent UPS from the US. I have noticed that there so called web tracking is never up to date. not a good sign.
UPS makes the decision pretty easy in Canada. They will always take your money for insurance, but will NOT honor claims for person-to-person shipments. So I have never considered using them. Purolator is even worse. They charge $3.25 per $100 for insurance, will always take your money, but do not honor claims for used electronics. Neither of them volunteer this information, you must ask specific questions. Are they thieves? Glad you asked!
The odds of UPS causing heart ache is "VERY" high indeed.

"CLEAR" I just had yet another adventure with the goons from UPS. FRAGILE means "F" this package up as best you can. This is without a doubt the final straw with this service. NEVER again, period!
Apparently it's what we all need for our electronics - a UPS.

Yep...you pays your money, you takes your chances. I'd rate FedEx Express the highest (you get what you pay for). Have had good luck with FedEx Ground as well, but I cherish no delusions. Won't use UPS to ship audio gear at all, unless the buyer requests it.
I, won't even ship a empty box with them again!
I package my stuff with a minimum of 2" of styrofoam all around, and double layer the top and bottom of the carton. Plenty o' tape helps too. Once and a while they win, but most of the time my stuff gets through unscathed, in spite of their best efforts.
I'm still waiting on delivery for two 2nd Day Air packages shipped the 22nd. They're telling me now I won't receive them until Wednesday. Let's see....that would be 1, 2, 3, 4... 5-Day Air Express Service.
My girlfriend's 2-day just took 5, but the airport they were flying out of cancelled flights for 2 of them. They were cool about a refund. Usually their fault, but some things are uncontrollable, and winter weather is one of them.
Double box, don't pack anything of any weight in foam peanuts - use solid foam instead, and use lots of tape (clear shipping kind - 3M heavy type is preferable - NOT duct tape or other). Actually foam peanuts may be OK between the inner and outer boxes in some cases, but the stuff gets everywhere, defying gravity and making a mess. Large bubble bubblewrap is MUCH better.
You are correct. UPS, FED EX, any of them it doesn't matter. Packed properly doesn't matter. If it gets to you without damage (especially large items like amps and speakers), you have simply beaten the odds, that's all.
Quit your ass-whining. If you don't like their service don't use them! Shipping anything is a crap shoot if it isn't packed properly.
Um err, it was incomming UPS. I never use them outgoing. Yes, I suppose it is the shippers fault.
unintelligible. I must say, I think mints would be in order.ja in partly cloudy and cool, Tucson, ass-whining? AZ
