Anally retentive, neurotic, insecure, uptight, fervently religious, and frequently irrational, hobbyist group of all?
Follow Ups:
'Hams' are notorious in this regard! And there are like a million of them in the USA alone.
...I never set my preamp output level on an odd number. It has be an even number. Same for the home theater receiver, odd numbers bug me.... volume level has to be set to an even number. ;-)

as having more appeal to this set of behavioral characteristics. Namely, collectors of coins, stamps, obsolete tools, old toys, and anything you might see on The Antique Roadshow. Audiophilia appeals to this nexus, but also appeals to another nexus which might be referred to as the "aesthetic pleasure" nexus. This means that audiophilia is closer to the collecting of art, and especially photography, with which it also shares a technological parallel. Characteristics that are part of this second nexus include novelty-seeking, sensory sensitivity, and openness to feeling in general. These two nexii(?) are not dichotomous, IMO, but may be behind the musical/analytical arguments. In this regard, "cheapness" means different things to these nexii. To the anal-retentive it means spending less, and therefore holding on to more money. To the aesthete it means that more people can afford to enjoy the pleasures that are important. One is generally inner-directed, and the other is outer-directed with respect to "cheapness".
...that audiophiles are anal retentive. Incidentally, the plural of "nexus" is "nexi," not "nexii."

they have read so many car and driver magazine articles about synthetic engine oil that they know more about cars when they bring them to me. most of them do not know how to change their own brake-lamp bulbs.
LOL......... YEP.., I've been doing import drivability for about 20 years now at dealers. The worst I have seen were the Mazda Miata people. They would get service bullitins before we would. One time the President of the local Miata club asked me to come "help" at a "spark plug changing party" ...sadly ,I had to decline the offer.
Yes, and I would add "cheapest" to your list of adjectives.
B.O.A.T. Bring on another thousand.
particularly sensitive, passionate, discriminating, feeling, and, sometimes, open people. Virtually all are striving to be more open to life and beauty. The fact that they are persistent and perservering in their quest is, I think, a wonderful trait. In my experience a lot of people take much of life for granted. I believe the people who are intense *music lovers* (and most audiophiles I know are - it's not an either-or thing, as in "are you an audiophile or a music lover") enjoy and appreciate a strong connection to what Tomasz Stanko calls the "soul of things".
Short answer: yes. I like to think that by holding to that middle ground I am just half as crazy or, to put it your way, half as retentive, neurotic, insecure, uptight, fervently religious, and frequently irrational as real audiophiles.

(Said in good humor) Kirk is the ONLY guy i know who would "do" a green chick! i mean c'mon, look at the diseases we have today! It has GOTTA get worse in a few hundreds years and if i saw a woman who was GREEN... i mean, sheeeeeeeesh... She has be have something bad :-)Enjoy the Music,
"savaged" at least 100 Tribbles each before passing out...
( another episode from "The Lost Voyages")
Ciao, GodfatherPostus Scriptum: I have a hysterical porno movie "Star Trek, the Next Penetration" that is so bad you'll cry from laughing.
Don't knock it till you've tried it - those green chicks ripen up after a while if exposed to sunlight.James T Kirk tended to prefer them straight off the vine but to my mind that's simply perverted and bordering on paedophilia. :0(

So I guess Spock doesnt have any big $$$ power cords in his quarters??
But I wasn't aware of the religious diehard aspect in either interest group, at least in a literal sense.Off topic, did you know that professional chess players are followed by female groupies who like to sleep their way up the rankings? (Leaving aside the g/l ones, of course. It's not like Rufus Wainwright or Richard Hell.) Does this happen to (for?) audio designers?

I enjoy both hobbies but I'd give up the stereo equipment before the clubs.

All we audiphiles do is sit on our fat asses and tweak our power cords once in awhile. This is hardly everwhelming obsession.

Crack, loose women, guns, long adventurous Vegas trips, fast cars.... Uh, I take the fast cars back, but you get the idea
nt
because I am married and I like my toys and would not want to lose them all or start from scratch or worse off being handed a Bose wave radio. LOL!
NO to the loose women?

I may be a loser but your assertion really pisses me off. As soon as I finish washing my LPs, I'm going to track you down so help me God. My psychotherapist warned me about people like you.
Antique pocket watch collectors are nuts. They actually have internet forums and clubs where they get together...uh, never mind.
There are guys who devote their whole lives (?) to customizing and racing belt sanders. Are they any more rational than us? Are they less committed to their hobby? At the end of the day, at least we have some nice music to listen to!
Wives and suffering partners of audiofools -- it could be worse!
And at the end of the day, they have a useful power tool.
Getting in shape to slide a big rock on the ice after to people sweep it with brooms has got to be about the dumbest sport ever conceived. Oh wait! There's synchronized swimming!

every anal thing we do has a rational purpose, so it's clear that you don't understand this hobby at all.
Actually someone once told me audiophiles are the laughing stock of the music world.
