The recipe calls for making a batter and adding the berries to the top instead of a crust. I know it needs ice cream but that is on the no-fly list for me. I got the berries from our local chain grocery and the black berries were so sweet they inspired me to make this cobbler and they didn't need very much sugar.

Man, that looks tasty.
Mom used instant tapioca as a thickener in her cobblers. Baked in a deep, slope-sided cast iron pot with strips of pie crust dough draped over the top in the classic open lattice form.
I've tried it, with mixed results. I'm not much of a baker. Cornbread and biscuits, and a decent key lime pie, that's about it.
