My Cambridge Audio Azur 840C CD player died. I am considering a Cambridge Audio CXC transport & a separate DAC. Since I have selected my audio components to reproduce a warmer (non-digital) sound, I am looking for a DAC with the same attribute. Several reviews recommend the Music Hall 15.2 & the 25.3 or the Schiit Modi Multibit DAC. I would appreciate your thoughts if you are familiar with these DACs. Thank you kindly.
Follow Ups:
I auditioned a Cambridge CXC transport in my music room for about three weeks. Used with my super-smooth Teac UD-503 DAC (which converts a CD transport's digital output to somewhat analog-like DSD), the CXC was a disappointment.
I purchased the CXC after reading a rave review in "What Hi-Fi?" magazine. The transport was far too edgy and harsh in the upper midrange. Brass instruments, especially trumpets, made me wince. I have come across comments by other users having similar experiences in their systems.
A Tascam CD-200 player's transport section was sonically superior (e.g., smooth, neutral, and easygoing on the ears) compared with both the Cambridge and the transport in the Marantz CD6006, which I also tested. The Tascam CD-200, a screaming bargain, has been replaced by the CD-200BT ($300). The CD-200 needed some initial run-in time to sound its best.
I ended up purchasing a pricier (now discontinued) Yamaha CD-N500 that I use as a transport. The Yamaha is very smooth, neutral, extremely detailed, and never fatiguing.
I agree I had a CXC for 2 years (into a Yggdrasil upgraded) and never heard what you are describing. CXC is sensitive to SPDIF cable and needs a good one. Lifatec Optical is nice.
Since changed to a PS audio PWT transport.
AES Balanced connection.
Different wires,equipment ears.
The sonic deficiencies were identical via both optical and coaxial outputs, using AudioQuest cables.
Since some folks experienced the same shortcomings whereas others did not, there is a strong possibility that Cambridge has a quality-control issue.
Did you try coax cables from any other manufacturer? Mine ( CXC) was noticeably on the bright side using a Grant Fidelity coax, but my current Oyaide DR-510 yields an excellent balance.
I briefly used an Acoustic Research Pro-Series coaxial cable. Same result.
I have a CXC and I don't hear any of the issues you mention. But I certainly can't dispute what you're hearing. No one single component is going to be a perfect fit for every system or ear.
They are both the same price, anyone compare or recommend?

LOL ......One is $99 and the other is $249...
It's the ID ten T problem.

but you don't have to be a nasty ass as usual. I thank you for the correction.

If you desire a DAC with a warm, traditionally 'analog' sound then I strongly suggest you consider one of the many NOS (digital filter-less) DACs which are available at a wide range of prices. While NOS can have it's own sonic flaws, analog warmth and ease are not among them.

This review from Audio Science Review isn't so good ...
I love the music of Dmitri Shostakovich ...![]()
Thank you, Feanor. Though a bit technical for my understanding, the review's conclusions are pauses for concern.
After looking at some of the reviews on the Schiit Modi Multibit, I have shifted my attention to the Schiit Modi 3. I am curious if anyone has any thoughts on this DAC. I am looking for a DAC with a warm analog signature that will pair well with the Cambridge Audio CXC transport. Thank you.
I have a Schiit Modi Multi and it is definitely on a bit of the warmer and analog side of things, not digital sounding at all.
I have since moved the Modi Multi out of my main system, but still own it. I replaced it with a Gungnir Multibit which also is non digital but a bit more resolving and a little more linear and less warm. While I feel the Gungnir is a better DAC, the Mimby is certainly a better value and very easy to listen too. This is why I won't part with it and am keeping it for future use.
Just me opinion tho.
Thank you, Aaron. In fact, I ordered the Modi Multibit today.
Please post back later and let us know what you think of Mimby after you have had a chance to listen.
