I haven't actually disassembled an IC to see how they are constructed but just by the description and photos that AQ publishes, the Positive terminal of a battery is connected to a central wire running down the middle of the cable bundle and the Negative terminal is connected to a wire on the outside of the conductive outer shield/sheath.

Again, I am not sure if the construction technique is changed as one ascends the product line but the new River series of IC's appear to be constructed somewhat differently than the Cat series.

All I know is that I like what the DBS does and I likes it alot, especially the 72VDC upgrade battery packs :-)
