After a rather unfortunate run-in with my housekeeper, my AN-E kit 03's have been meticulously refinished in a hand-rubbed crotch mahogany. Here are some pics :)
(shadow of the speaker cable makes it look like there are many more cables than there really are) :)
Follow Ups:
Great stuff Nico! Am sure the speakers sound real nice matched with AN components.

Stunning. Congratulations to you and your cabinet maker. I've been trying to get a nice finish on the basic Baltic birch, but they look nowhere near as nice as yours. I made the mistake of using a polyurethane-based rub on finish, which looks nice but I think has limits. I wanted to use violin lacquer, but was intimidated by the idea.Does anyone know if veneer glue will stick to a poly finish? I'm thinking of starting over from scratch.

You will have to sand the poly with a sander (100-150 -grid)to bare wood which is not difficult. Try to buy spray contact cement and wait untill both surfaces (veneer and the cab )are fairly dry (don't stick to a dollar bill)Trim router really helps with veneering. For finish I like a few layers of tung-oil with light 220-300 sanding in between the coats (take a long time to dry ) and good wax on the top . Brings the grain out beautifully . Regards

Second that: Wow!That must be one of the nicest finishes I've ever seen on any speaker. You give the factory a serious run for their money. The finish is lusturous; it glows.
And, in describing it, you get to say "crotch".
AN factory finish is subpar. AN simply doesn't do good wood working. I think Nico's is much nicer.

My cabinet builder is amazing, and does absolutely gorgeous work. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that he probably puts way more time into these than most factories are willing to put in on speaker finishes. I believe he applied over a dozen coats of violin lacquer, with meticulous hand-sanding in between to some ridiculously high grit.So if anyone's interested, I'd be happy to pm the contact info for my cabinet builder. :) Thanks for the comments!

The cabinet itself is built in baltic birch on all sides. Veneer is mahogany crotch. :)

I was wondering if it was the birch that had that nice finish.
Did your cabinet guy build the whole thing, or just the refinishing?
