Reasonable points Fred. The Metric Halo dacs use an asynchronous firewire. Perhaps they would be less prone to first order effects.
The USB cable fits into the second order effects that John indicated will need more research.
The point I was trying to make to Norm is that both firewire and usb face similar problems in their execution.
