The New Magnepan Sub

Posted by TheGoodCaptain on April 2, 2008 at 17:47:26:

I was at Lyric Hi Fi today and saw an odd looking item. Two 10.5 inch woofers mounted on opposing panels connected by four stainless steel rods nearly an inch thick. The whole thing was open, except for a boxed in area at the back.
Phil Browning said it's the Magnepan SGB-01 dipole subwoofer. They had just unboxed it, but were in the process of hooking it up to a pair of 1.6/QR's. I had no idea this speaker was in the works and can't google up anything, but here's what I learned from Phil.

Dipole free air sub, 375 watts pushing aluminum drivers. Xover box looked conventional with high level and standard sub connections with variable crossover from 25-80 HZ. Rated Freq response is down to 27hz. List price seemed high at 1395.00.

The 1.6/QR's were run by a 200 watt Classe integrated and they used the high level connections. CD player was also Classe, but I don't know much about it. Though the sub was playing for the very 1st time this was easily the best sound I ever heard from the speaker pair. After a few adjustments they became a truly full range speaker and sounded dynamic in a way that reminded me of my old Carver Amazings. Without break-in, the Maggie sub sounded fast, articulate and perfectly blended with the speakers. We were all pretty impressed.

I believe my subwoofer search is at an end at last. Actual shipping, according to Phil, may be 8 weeks off. He and a few other dealers were advanced samples to generate some early orders.
