I have a new SHURE M92E which I would like to try in place of a new SUMIKO Oyster that I have with my Pro-Ject 1.2E. The M92E is a heavier cart but has a much lighter reccomended tracking force than the Oyster (Shure: 1.25g vs Oyster: 2.3g) and a lower adjustable range (0.75-1.5 vs 1.5 -2.3 respectively). Its seems that it would better having a lower cartridge/stylus force on an LPs…Also the two stylus' are differnet in design.
Oyster: spherical 0.6 mil
Shure: bi-radial 0.4 x 0.7 milWhat are the factors in the two designs? Which design is "better"…. Or, that is, what are the atvantages and disatvantages of the two…
Advice needed. And any comments or opinions appreciated…
FYI / additional info:My turntable, the Proj-Ject 1.2E, I am very happy with. I have it properly set-up (adjusted, balanced, leveled, etc.) with the Oyster. My turntable is very well isolated from any floor and other vibrations. So all other factors are regarding my system and TT are is "good" working order. When I try the SHURE I will have to get the optinal, heavier counter weight mentioned in the Pro-Ject manual… (I don't have it yet to try the M92E for doing a comparison by ear). But I will order it the counter weight and try it…
With my current set-up I have had no problems with the Pro-Ject, the Oyster and my system. Compared to what I used to play my LPs on this is a big improvement for me. Up to 1995 I was using a Technics SL-B10 with an "okay" Pickering cart' (I forget what the model was). This year I have decided to get back into listening to my vinyl LPs with the new TT. I'm very pleased with what I hear :) Also some of my music seems more dynamic and "warmer" on LP vs CD… For example, I have an early CD release of Fragile by Yes and a 80s realease of it on LP. With my system the LP seems to sound better. Same goes for some other examples… My current system consists of all the following:
Mitsubishi:
Pre amplifier DA-P20
Power amplifier DA-A10DC
FM tuner DA-F202-Nakamichi cassette decks:
BX-100 & BX-125Philips CD player:
CD960/17RMission 2-way speakers:
Model 761Pro-Ject turntable:
1.2E w/ Sumiko Oyster cartridgeI have "very good" interconnects and speaker wires all with "decent quality" gold connectors.
I would say that I have a "respectable" system (everything is relative...right?) I guess I could say that its on the "low end" of "high end" systems. But it does sound good for me at the moment.
