having been a VPI owner for 10 years, trying various upgrades -- and hearing many of the "newer" turntables with acrylic platers....i think the 'super platter' is probably alot better than the acrylic platter, but at some point you have to look at the total amount of money sunk into that turntable. if you are talking of adding $2k (is that the price?), then i would seriously look elsewhere.
what is the cost of everything you have put in your super scountmaster? what is the cost of the super platter? what can you get for the SSM on the used market?
when making these upgrades, i think one needs to compare where else they could go in analog -- perhaps a table that is designed without acrylic (done as a cost-cutting measure at the expense of sound) would be a more satisfying investment, and if you are flush with the cash for a super platter now might be a very convenient time to make the switch.
if you are still using a JMW tonearm, you migth also want to investigate that as an area to upgrade as the arm is an easy area to improve upon, albeit at a cost. the JMW design is a bit long in the tooth, to use harry's words from elsewhere.
caveat: this is my opinion from being on-board the VPI ship, then owning/hearing other turntables, as well as seeing HW's overall attitude in the matter. HW might have a different opinion, and he might express it quite eloquently.
