When you engineer a tonearm....

You are designing it around an alignment scheme for the tonearm. As John E points out there is no bad alignment scheme. They all have their pluses and minuses. It is very easy to try them all and see what works best with your cartridge of choice.

The Technics closely follows the Stephenson alignment scheme which is similar to early SME arms and Rega tonearms.

I find that Stephenson generally provides reduced inner track distortion. However this is not a one size fits all. I have tonearms and cartridges that prefer Baerwald.

It is kind of Brian for digging up the proper documentation. I suspected this from the Technics alignment piece they sell to align the cartridge.
