experiment away! You can always wipe something off and try another, and I doubt you'll harm the beast with any experiments so long as the bearing is lubed.Very glad you're liking it. You might have fun by experimenting with armboard materials also, comparing them to the stock aluminum one.
You might consider trying a ply lining for the plinth, along with an mdf one, as you might hear an appreciable difference. An experimental/removable mechanical bond between the layers (screws!) would probably be good enough to determine if one sounded better than the other.
