I've seen and used this method myself on a few turntables. If shipping, be sure the mailing tube rests on the plinth, not the tonearm. Sounded like you weren't shipping, so probably okay to rest on the tonearm.
I've covered idled turntables with sheets of flat cardboard, sometimes with a pillowcase or other piece of fabric on top. The fabric keeps the dust off (or, rather, gallantly throws itself in the path of oncoming dust) the whole thing, and the cardboard keeps the fabric out of the tangly bits on the turntable.
