Yes.I didn't try sand with the equipment rack but I did in my Lovan speaker stands. I thought the improvement of lead over sand in the speaker stands was about on a a par with the level of improvement with sand over the stock stand.
I haven't tried a combination of sand and shot. I filled the rack through the spike holes and ther're very small - doing sand and shot through there would be a pain. If you remove the top buttons on each leg so you have an opening the width of the leg's internal diameter, it would be relatively easy to do and I've heard others besides heath a. in the post below say the combination is better than lead on its own.
