Tweakers' Asylum Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ. |

Well, they didn't turn my Greybeard speakers into Avalon Eidolons, but I like what I'm hearing. I completed the clones (thanks Jon Risch, Thorsten, and Greg Weaver!) pretty much to Jon's and Thorstens specs (but Greg's pics gave me the confidence to undertake the project). I finished the PVC and bases Saturday, did a bit of listening without stuffing them. Imaging was a bit improved, but not a dramatic difference. I followed Greg's recommendation on the arrow heads for feet, with three for ease of leveling. This got the bases off the floor about 1". I used vinyl gutter screen (~50% open area) stapled on the bottom of the bases for the screening. Then Sunday I stuffed them with foam mattress pad cut to 12" wide x the lengths prescribed by Thorsten. The foam worked really well for the short lengths, but stuffing 4' of foam into the tubes was a mother (I ended up cutting up the foam into shorter lengths so it was easier to install).
Well, I was quite suprised with the results of the stuffing. Imaging improved even more, and although I wasn't expecting much, bass tightened up and I got better slam on kick drums. Tympani on big orchestral pieces were astounding--very life like and room rumbling.
All in all I spent ~$60 and ~4 hours including a $15 2 3/8" Forstner bit (definitely the way to cut big holes--I messed around for two hours trying other drilling methods). I haven't finished them, yet, which will probably take another couple hours. The WAF on the unfinished units is not high. I haven't secured the pipe in the bases yet, nor have I figured a good way to make an unobtrusive bracket at the top to maintain the proper flare. They're just flopping about, basically parallel. I'm hoping for a bit crisper imaging when I get them attached and braced. I hope this encourages others to try this tweak--definitely worthwhile.
