Joe,
I just got finished repairing my Scott 299. I had some problems with hum and the unit spent lots of time upside down right on the floor until I got everything fixed. The only problem I can see is that the heat dissapation from the tubes isn't good when upside down but this shouldn't be harmful for sort periods.
