caps aren't linear devices either they have resistance & inductance which make them sluggish in the higher frequencies. The smaller they are the faster they are. So, the 0.1mfd was installed to transmit the higher frequencies, while they added the others together to generate 22mfd total.About a decade ago vinyl&tubists kept complaining about this configuration. What it turns out these different values transmit different signals at different speeds which clutter the output & can even induce beating from the interference. Since then, tubists adopted method #1. Instead of a single cap, they divide the cap into several identical ones. Thus, gaining speed while maintaining their detailed uniform output.
Meanwhile SS guys use method #2 which is a compromise between speed & multipath degeneration. In such a case, each cap acts as if it has a band to operate in since its the path of least impedence. Plus, the smaller units can affordably replaced with non-inductive caps. BTw, non-inductive caps are made by a simple configuration modification by eccentricly extending the foil outside the film of the cap such that one side is one plate & the opposing is the other. By wiring the leads to them the current does have to travel in a circle creating inductance.
