battery is the way to go, but you'll still need regulators and some caps behind them to clean up the power perfectly.costs more with batteries? I think a really well built AC/DC power supply will cost you far more than a battery setup.
7ah 12V gel cells sell for $7.50 on ebay, smart chargers are $15. I am currently building a DDDAC1543 (www.dddac.de) and it'll utilize 3 such batteries and 3 chargers. Total cost of that still far less than the power supply in my tube preamp.
I am already thinking of rigging up a larger battery to power my CD transport...
