Brilliant post,Very good and well constructed.
I also like to have an open mind on hi fi and like you say there are components out there that cost a small fortune,Yet even though they sound good,There is still large room for improvements.

I collected many audio components,Recently i have had about 7 Audio Research components,Including The SP9,Sp6(a),SP10,Ls-2(b),Pre amplifiers.Also the VT100,VT60 and D110 power amplifiers.

The desighns are vey good but it simply bewilders me when i look at some of the desighn desishions given the price.
I think its such a shame there are not enough people like yourself who are very open minded and look at the end results in an honest way,The manufactures seem to spend more time on marketing than construction thesedays.The mods you mentioned sound like something all manufacturers should do but very rarely do.

Like in the SP10 from ARC,Why,Why,Why do they insist on Balance and Mode controls on the front,Who on earth has a "mono" system or the speakers"reversed".When a freind bought the 10 the first things to go where these pots and the sooner the better.
The sound changed immediatly to a more purer form.

I guess the mods you mentioned is where the manufacturer slaps the "special edition" or "signature" badge on the front to reep even more profit.It would be interesting if all the hi fi manufactureres got there best desighners together to produce a one off desighn that incorperated all the best elements known to the hi fi world.

I like to mod anything that resembles hi fi and try not to pay attention to the hype or price of items,It amazes me how some of the mods cost peanuts to do but make such a differnce.?
