Hum in the turntable.

I thought I would post here since you guys tend to be more technically adept. I have a soft hum in the left channel only of my turntable which gets worse when I swing the tone arm over the platter (with or without a cartridge attached). I have a Denon DP55K which is a direct drive utilizing a quartz synchronizer.
Now here's the question -- the tonearm (Unitrac I) has a separate ground from the turntable and I cannot ground both the arm and the turntable without a very loud hum. When I measured the voltage between the two grounds with the turntable off, the difference was 16 Volts AC that drops to about 11v when I turn the turntable on (which at least explains the hum) Any ideas why I have the large AC voltage? and any solutions? Is the left channel hum related to this hum (I think the left channel hum may be RFI generated by the turntable).
