It IS very easy to wind up with a short when making a set of CAT5's. USE A VOLTMETER when separating and terminating the strands.I am (usually) very careful, and have still ended up with shorts. I once drove a shorted cable for an entire day, and didn't notice it until I turned the amp way up, and it's protection circuitry kicked in (a testament to my amp really, but scary nonetheless).
