Thinner wire has more resistance than thicker wire, so thicker gauge wires will have less resistance-related effects. Resistance-related effects can be eliminated by using 12 gauge (or lower) for long runs of wire (in your case 17-foot lengths.) Keep in mind short runs (no matter what gauge) is always better for a verity of other reasons.Your IC's become more problematic at 3 meters, but if you need that length, then so be it. When using single-ended interconnects It is worth getting just the right length of cables. In other words if you can get away with a 2.5 meter (or the bare minimum length) then do so.
