When we set up a blind test last year (looks over shoulder for the DBT cops), we had to keep reducing the quality of the bad cables for anyone (except one person) to hear. We ended up with a normal high cost cable against 18ga lamp cord about 20' in length. Anything beyond that and there were no takers. With that setup we got about 75% correct answers. Move to 16 or 14 gage and almost everyone was lost. But maybe we had a room full of people with bad hearing :)
