This sounds atypical of the SEAS to my ears anyways. I do not like a harsh or siblant sound and I would definatly not attribute this sound to the W15CY001. The W15CH does not have lower distortion then the CY, on the DIY audio board the opposite was said!Res traps to tame the 8k peaks are not something to ingor you need them period. My design is fully active with a SS97 tweet and peerless 850146 on bass. This is crossed at 150hz and 2k, and does not sound harsh or fatiguing with any siblance what so ever, even if siblance is there its benign enough not to cause any discomfort. Ofcourse this is what a different xvoer is about, get it wrong and they can sound forward and waring on the ears, believe me Ive been there, get it right and its beautiful music.
The increasing distortion with frequency does not cause this either, I have crossed over at 3.5k with 2nd order slopes and there was no forward harshness in the sound either.
So bottom line is if xovered correctly they wont sound harsh, the VAF guy may like a more forward sound. Or it could be any number of things, the xover components, yes they could be a part of this, solens are not hugely expensive so try replacing them with these. I doubt the wire would cause it tho, I have used some of the finest wire to link the W15 and SS97 to the terminal cups on the loudspeakers upgrading to QED silver anni didnt remove any harshness, so this is not worth it. If you do change it burn in isnt nescessary, if the change isnt superior in the 1st five minutes the cable wont change to be better in time, or not a huge amount. Room interaction between the speakers and you could cause a brighter sound, try adding some duvets to the walls to see if it changes the sound, altho not a permenant solution it will let you know whats at fault.
The next thing I mention but last because you say its not this, is the equipment, you really do need good kit to partner the excels they are ruthlessly revealing, and will make a harsh amp sound like a banshee. If however you have a smooth cheapo amp they wont make it sound harsh, they simply let you hear what your other components are doing.
