This isn't exactly what you asked about, but you're not going to get a woodgrain finish from MDF unless you try for a faux woodgrain effect, which has to be done very well not to look tacky, so it's probably easier to try for a complimentary plain colour.The most satisfying finish I've achieved has been to apply several coats of spray putty (automobile panel filler), sanding between each with increasingly fine paper. After about 4 or 5 coats it results in a glassy smooth "skin". To finish it I then apply several coats of flat paint in whatever colour is appropriate. Flat paint over a very smooth surface results in a satin finish. It's relatively easy to do and will successfully hide the tiniest imperfections. Once the paint has cured it is quite tough.
