The plans show the brace is installed in dado cuts in the side panel,
the cuts must be 1/4 inch deep for each dado.A dado is simply a channel cut in the wood.If you don't want to bother with dados,just cut your brace down to 7" and glue to the surface of the side panels.
BTW glueing the brace into a dado is much stronger than glueing to a flat surface.
