Tweakers' Asylum Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ. |
|
Yesterday I went to a hardware store and bought a few things to deal with a DIY project that requires not more than an hour. I spent under $15.00 for all the materials and I just needed to cut a few PVC units.Materials:
(4) 3/4" x 10' PVC pipes
(8) 3/4" "T's"
(3) 3/4" x 72" Foam Insulation CoversProcedure:
Cut (6) pieces of 58" long 3/4" pipes.
Cut the Insulation Foam to form (6) 36" pieces ( or halves)
Cut (4) 2 1/2" PVC pieces
Cut (2) 3 1/2" PVC piecesAssembly
Use the 36" IFC to cover the top part of the 58" pipes
Connect(twice) (4) T's to the little pieces:
(a) vertical T == 2 1/2" piece== horizontal T == 2 1/2"== vertical T
(b) the horizontal T == 3 1/2" piece == vertical T
Insert each pipe into the vertical T's . The foamed pipe has to be on top.Results...
Now you have a T shaped device with a mix of RL and Noodle Lenses. You can use (4) curves and (2) Ts with the same little pieces sizes to stabilize the devise at the top if you want.
I made some experimentation last night with a disc of Norah Jones and Diane Krall. I changed the position of the devices using a same song from the cd I used at the time. From behind my speakers, paralell to the speakers inner sides, besides my center RL and a few more.
Best results were besides the center lense and a when used a little in front of them. The results were subtle but audible.
Everytime I persive a degree of separation between musicians. The piano notes were fuller and cleaner. Diane voice was more palpable too. I noticed more air and the drum's metallic sound from the dish were more extended. Also, the guitars sounded more realistic.
When used besides my speakers the soundstage got closer to my listenning position and when used near the front wall, the stage get mote laidback but the focus wasn't there. I prefer them in the midle part and to the sides of the center lense.
I'm still experimenting but for $15.00....I can't be happier!!!
They also look cool and since my curtains are beige and the IFC is beige, they dissapier into the curtains.
Last....I don't use cones, spikes or anything else. They just seat over the T's hole at a vertical side making them like a tripody.
Hope this helps,,,
Jose.
PS Home Depot sells the IFC in sets of 4 pieces of 36" and 2" diameter (like the ones I used).
