It helps to have a bit of background with electronics, although not absolutely necessary. As for books, Parts Express has a couple you should start with: "Designing, Building, and Testing Your Own Loudspeakers" by David Weems, and the venerable "Loudspeaker Design Cookbook" by Vance Dickason. For the more advanced designer, Joseph D'Appolito has written "Testing Loudspeakers". Crossover design is the most critical factor in the success of a loudspeaker. Cabinet design is second, but they really work together. Quality drivers are also extremely important. Luckily, there are some good drivers from Parts Express (Dayton), Silver Flute (Madisound), and Vifa that won't stop your heart with sticker shock. Short change on one, and no matter how good the other is, your loudspeaker will come up short. Another alternative is to consider one of the many kits available from Parts Express, Northcreek Music, Selah Audio, or Murphyblaster. You'll also need some testing equipment like a multimeter, an SPL meter, and a computer design program. On the FRD Condsortium website there are several freeware programs to help you get started.
