I know Ben and have some experience with the Hallographs (as an owner and as someone who has talked to Ben about what is going on and as such has knowledge of the history behind the Hallographas) and can say that nothing about them is by chance or simply an issue of cosmetics.
Ben spent well over a year of time experimenting (along with lots of money) on the types of wood, their shape and dimensions, the finish, the overall size and the postioning of each piece/part, along with some other design issues that make them do what they do.
No doubt someone could make a DIY version from pictures, and it may do "something" that is of benefit (having people stand in the corners behind the speakers helps to an extent - but then you have to feed them!), but I doubt that you will be able to replicate what they are really doing.
To do that you would have to buy a pair, measure the angles and contours, select the right wood, take them apart to see how they are constructed, etc. to make a reasonable copy. By then it would have been easier and cheaper to keep the originals.
I love to DIY, but sometimes a "copy" of the original is just not the way to go! I agree that they are not "cheap" but I also know what it costs Ben to make them and the pricing falls into the standard $$ of manufacturing.
Even, so have fun DIYing! Let us know what you hear.
