Like agram below, I recommend De-oxit for cleaning--this stuff is miraculous. An application of ProGold afterwards seems to make the cleaning last longer.Get the sprays--I don't know why, but they work better for me than the concentrates. The little dosage cups that come with kids' liquid medicines are perfect for the job (No kids? Use a shot glass or equivalent), squirt some in and use pipe cleaners, Q-tips, etc. to clean. (Caig makes some tiny tapered brushes that are perfect for cleaning the innards of male and female RCA jacks/plugs.) Wipe off the stuff with a clean Q-tip or whatever--even after wiping there will be a thin film of ProGold left behind.
Clean every part of every mechanical connection in your system: jacks on the gear, plugs on your interconnects, spade lugs or bananas or whatever you're using on your speakers, binding posts, antenna F-connectors, turntable grouding posts, etc.
If you've never done this before, you're gonna be amazed.
Also, if you ever have a noisy volume control (or other pot) or switch, take the cover off and use DeOxit on it and turn the pot or throw the switch repeatedly while wet. I have saved many a friend's older piece of gear from the scrap heap this way.
I've never experienced gumminess, perhaps that's a tube socket thing, or perhaps some folks didn't know to wipe the stuff off.
