Old Marantz gear

Hi all

New to the forum, so nice to be here!

I've just bought myself some old, reasonable quality gear secondhand off ebay, nothing awesome, but a start.

Marantz CD72 II SE
Marantz PM80

These have been wired up with my existing cables, Cardas 300B and Kimber 8PR, and are driving a pair of Acoustic Energy AE505 floorstanders (bought NOS from the factory just up the road).

The idea was to get reasonably good equipment for next to nothing, and then upgrade and tweak cheaply rather than spend big money.

My first attack is to be on the amp as it's the oldest component, and looks like it needs the most doing to it. I'm looking for advice on where to start....

Actually I know where I'm going to start, the power cable is the wimpiest bit of two core flex that I wouldn't use for a bedside lamp, so that will get replaced immediately. But what suggestions do you have for cable (UK available, please) and what else should I look for while I'm inside the box? The two 'ELNA' 18000 uF caps in the PS look like they're as new, but the rest of the boards look like refugees from the seventies! It seems a substantial amp (about 100W/ch in A/B or 20W/ch in class A), and doesn't sound at all bad as a starting point.

Anybody have any comments regarding mods to any of the equipment? I'll be delighted to hear them, even if they're along the lines of 'throw that amp away it'll never be worth anything.....!'

Best Regards,

StewartM
