Comparisons: P&S and Leviton AC Outlets

205.227.226.69

A comparison was made of four outlets from Pass and Seymour and Leviton.
The criteria was easy availability.
No special searches were made for particular models except the P&S 5242 since it is a sonically well regarded low cost unit.
A 15 Amp and 20 Amp outlet was used from each manufacturer.
The results were as follows from worst to best:

Leviton 5362 20 Amp: the weakest of the group showing agressive upper midrange and highs. Good dynamics.

P&S 5242 15 Amp: Smooth highs, slightly recessed midrange, adequate dynamics. A good choice for agressive amplifiers.

Leviton 5262 15 Amp: A good outlet. Smooth highs, a fuller and more detailed midrange than the P&S 5242. Adequate dynamics.
Interestingly, both 15 Amp outlets gave a subtle sense of restricted power available for transients and low frequencies.

P&S CR20 20 Amp: The best of this lot. Smooth highs and a full midrange with very good detail. A punchy, powerful low end and a sense of ease with plenty of reserves.

It's important to remember that this was just an experiment not trying to get the "best" of anything.
As mentioned at the start, these were readily available outlets. Hospital Grades were not included as from what I've heard their sonics are not particularly good, althought I have not heard them personally.
I'm sure these manufacturers (and others) make better sounding units within their product lines although I think the P&S CR20 is a good outlet regardless.
This was cheap and fun, I recommend you try this yourselves.
Good luck.
