Symposium Clone questions

I have a few questions for those of you who have built Symposium shelf clones.

I was planning to try it, given the positive feedback I have seen here.

So, I printed out a bunch of threads from here on the subject, but I also looked at the symposium webpage, and I looked at their patent application, which is online at the link below. I remember from looking at the taddeo digital antidote patent that you can find some good information in a patent application.

What I saw in the patent is they use Gatorfoam for the inner foam core, and I have not seen another mention of that here. Seems like most people are buying PE foam from foambymail. You can go to gatorform.com to find information on gatorfoam, and they have distributors all over the place.

So in the patent, it calls out for

0.120 aluminum
0.125 Duron hardboard
0.75 MDF
0.5 Gatorfoam
0.75 MDF
0.125 Duron hardboard
0.04 aluminum

The gatorfoam layer is recessed on the outer edge, from the other layers by 0.125 inches.
Duron is the brand name of the hardboard they called out.
They also call out for an 0.03 thick textured polystyrene edging, which covers the aluminum, Duron and MDF edges.

The also show a 2nd version, which has a core that started at 1.5 inches thick, but was compressed to 1.25 inches thick when installed, so they compress the core when they put the thing together. I have no idea how to DIY that version, I guess it’s their ultra shelf.

So, I was wondering if anyone else knew of this, and has used Gatorfoam?

Thanks,
Randy
