To correct your polarity, you can just run it 180 degrees out of phase, *IF* you have a phase switch.
However, I think you have another problem. Most likely a short at the termination of your DIY cable. I'm going to assume you used coax cable, so how can you solder the thing backwards? Maybe I misunderstand?
I have a Velodyne FSR-12 sub and it makes a pop, followed by a pulsating sound for a couple of seconds, when first powered up. I'm hoping this is normal!
