As your friend found out, some manufacturers are pretty close. On the other hand, I've measured parameters that were 50% higher or lower than the manufacturer's specs. But the really important measurement that the folks that provide crossover designs is the measurements of the drivers installed in your enclosure. That particular aspect alone makes their design a good starting point at best.
