basically you have two sources of vibration: from the air and up from whatever is supporting the component. the innertube takes care of isolating from vibrations coming up from below but that's only half the battle. the granite is there for mass coupling (F=M*A so the larger the 'M', the smaller the 'A', basically) and the sorbothane passively damps airborn vibrations. all three components perform a distinct role while working together to minimize vibrational effects.
