I bypassed the HDAM too and the sound did open up. Slightly better image and more HF extension (probably the former is caused by the latter).
Something was missing though and after a while I reconnected it and all was well again. With the buffer the sound was more 'together' and LF was more tuneful.
Might depend what op-amp you're using though. I tried LM6172, AD826 and AD825 without the buffer and they all sounded better (IMO) with it. (This is in a CD-67SE). Strangely the AD825 coped better. Maybe it also depends on the load being driven. With the buffer though the AD826 wins and that's what I use.Curious to see that HDAMs are in Philips gear. I know Marantz was owned by Philips until recently but I thought they only appeared in Marantz stuff.
Agree about the output caps though - huge improvement. Also, your diff-amp resistor-mathing tweak was a corker.
