I don't know the logic, but I suppose it has to do with the increased rolling resistance on the contact surface between balls and player. I added some sand on top of the player and it started to sound less and less detailed. This could be due to the soft/thin metal plate on the bottom of the player, which I am trying to replace with the sheet of thick aluminum. I'll try it againg after the conversion, but so far weight anywhere above the bearing ball contact point has not been showing any positive effects. There's some weight that gets added because of the damping and the plate, but it won't be anywhere near the amount I added when things started to sound really muddy in my sand bag test.
