Sandbox - How Deep?

I'm going to construct sandboxes for a pair of mono block tube amps (Quicksilver Triodes), and could use some advice. Right now, I'm thinking that the materials used for the sides and bottom aren't too critical, so I can use pine side walls with a plywood bottom. I was thinking 4" pine - is that deep enough for amps weighing 45 pounds, or should I go to 6"?

For the plinth, I might start with plywood (if I have it around), and maybe go for thick smoked glass later on. Any suggestions?

Also - I've got some sandbox type sand, which I would classify as fine-medium on the Wentworth scale (I'm a geologist!). Is finer sand better. Should I purchase some fine, fine sand?

Thanks, Peter
