Thanks, Dave.Make no mistake, however, things are sounding much better than they look right now! I haven't decided how to finish the sandwich yet for aesthetics, but I may end up going with my stop-gap solution. I currently have a piece of felt covering everything below the top aluminum sheet. It actually looks quite nice, and it is able to hide the inner tube that is supporting the sandwich. In addition, the felt has no effect on the sound of the sandwich, whereas something like an epoxy coat poured around the outside of the sandwich might affect the sound of the sandwich.
As for symmetry, your approach may be a good one. Although isolation is a two way street, the characteristics of the vibrations that enter from each side of the sandwich are different. The floor borne vibrations will likely have more low frequency content than the component generated vibrations. TWhen you begin to consider the air borne vibrations, however, things get less clear. In the absence of the right equipment and lots of careful measurement and study, trial and error will be the best way to answer questions like this.
