Check out the HR-10 mini-plug connectors from Hirose. They come in many different pin configs but are all very small and of extremely high quality. The series uses a sexy push-pull system, which is low insertion force, high reliability (you don't worry about crossing threads), and fast connect/disconnect. I use the 12-pin version for power supply umbilical for my preamp.Not terribly inexpensive, but they are cheaper than the heavy-duty AMP stuff and you don't have to buy expensive pin insertion/extraction tools or crimpers. Digikey carries them.
