All I know is that I've got Dynaudio speakers with Dynaudio stands and the stands are steel. The combination sounds great and there is no interference that I can detect.
Of course things might vary with different speaker/stand combinations but the majority of stands seem to be steel, the majority recommended seem to be steel, and this is the first comment of that sort which I have heard. That doesn't seem to indicate that the problem, if it exists, is all that wide spread.
